Exhibition Sugar Honey, Cordonhaus, Cham, 2014

trickfilm, paper, ledder, boxes, drawings

„For Cham, she (Almut) has created a complete installation entitled “Time to change the Underwear”. According to the artist, you have to start somewhere if you want to start a revolution. The film “Rampenlicht” from 2013, which is projected onto the main wall on a large scale, is introduced on the left-hand side of the room like a trail with a series of partly large-format drawings in ink. Inspired by the fairy tale “The Wizard of Oz”, the red shoes are enchanted by the hands of a good witch and begin to dance.

Trapped in a box, the “gut feeling”, a film that can be viewed through a small opening at the front and shows a grumbling, writhing belly, announces itself. Like a curtain or a flame flickering upwards, the “Flame Curtain” follows with its painted paper panels, creating an expansive transition and casting shadows ahead to the “Limelight”, the climax of the production. The dancing feet come into the spotlight, moving skillfully until the light suddenly develops a life of its own and the feet can barely keep up with the glow, are outshone and ultimately nothing remains of them but a black puddle.

This short story is representative of many people, even though the artist also processes her own biography in her films. Using her own person as a projection screen, she refers to universally valid themes and forms an overall installation with the animations for Cham, which place power, powerlessness and success in a direct context. The hands, which visualize “stop”, “enough is enough” or “get lost” in sign language, set the low point before the course – like the films shown in the loop – starts all over again. According to the signs of our time, everything is in flux.“
